Tobias wolff the night in question5/29/2023 Tobias Wolff’s short stories have gained him widespread acclaim with his works appearing often in The New Yorker and Esquire among other publications. These precise words depict characters tentatively seeking to redefine themselves in climactic moments of self-growth. In each case, the speaker is doing far more than consoling a person in distress. Three of Wolff’s stories close with the same two words: “I’m here.” I explore why this short sentence has such resonance in his work by drawing connections between these stories which span thirty years. I argue that Wolff shows how a focus on the present rather than on fleeting impulses or a fixation with the past can elucidate his protagonists’ lives. I argue that the perceived vulnerability of forming relationships and the complex duties of moral decision-making create a tension that forms the basis of much of Wolff’s storytelling. In many of his stories, characters are caught between a guarded sense of distance, versus an imperative to connect with those around them. Wolff depicts characters who must struggle to move away from solipsistic ideologies by seeing beyond habitual cycles of stagnated and destructive behavior. This article argues that Tobias Wolff critiques a doctrine of individualism, formed particularly in America during the Eighties, which has informed a central dynamic in his writing.

Lincoln herbert donald5/29/2023 Coverage of the Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858 proves absolutely superb. Equally valuable is the way this book traces Lincoln’s public and private views toward slavery from his childhood through his presidency. White’s synthesis of Lincoln’s complex life is well calibrated and his frequent review of Lincoln’s most notable letters and speeches is interesting and insightful. Numerous maps, charts, illustrations and photographs are embedded throughout the text, and they appear when contextually appropriate rather than being bunched together arbitrarily as is the case with many books. White manages to pack his pages with a significant amount of detail but without losing the big picture or slowing the book’s pace. Consistent with my expectations, this book provided a broad, clear and penetrating review of our sixteenth president.Īlthough this is a lengthy biography (with nearly 700 pages of text and almost 100 pages of notes) it is lucid, free flowing and extremely easy to read. So it is high praise that White’s effort is often described as the best single-volume Lincoln biography since David Herbert Donald’s “Lincoln” was published in 1995. There is certainly no shortage of biographies of Abraham Lincoln. He is currently working on a biography of Ulysses S. He is a graduate of UCLA and Princeton Theological Seminary and is a Visiting Professor of History at UCLA. White is the author of seven other books including two previous books on Lincoln. Lincoln: A Biography” is Ronald White, Jr.‘s 2009 biography of Abraham Lincoln. Saga brian vaughan5/29/2023 Just seeing this baby, this toddler, this little girl, be forced to grow up in a world where hatred is bred. I’ve always said that it is completely genius to have this story be told with Hazel as the narrator, and Volume 9 really showcases that. But this addition to the story was a masterpiece, a painful masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless. Especially not knowing when Volume 10 will be released because the creators are taking a break. I can’t help being invested with each and every character, but this volume just hurts. This is for sure the most emotionally driven volume of Saga yet, which is really saying something considering everything that has happened over the course of all of these issues. “War can’t be ended any more than the rain.” Goodreads | Amazon US | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository Barbara kingsolver demon copperhead5/29/2023 Edgar Hoover, was given the Pulitzer for biography after previously receiving the Bancroft Prize, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Barbara and David Zalaznick Book Prize from the New-York Historical Society. The beasts of tarzan 19165/28/2023 The end is terribly anticlimactic though, with an unnecessary set of secondary villains which just appear by a change. After a good chase, Tarzan finally reaches Jane and Rokoff and while Tarzan himself doesn't give the final blow, the evil, cowardly villain meets his end in the fangs of Sheeta. While Tarzan is tailing Rokoff, Jane herself is running from the Russ, aided by a Swedish chef of the villain's vessel Kincaid. Even Jane, unlike more typical heroines of the decade, gives some resistance to the foes. He also gets the help of a black chief Mugambi, so all in all he has a good set of helpers with him during the game of cat and mouse with Rokoff.Īs you might imagine, in a solid pulp fiction fashion, Tarzan and Jane go through a load of hardships before all is said and done. All in all a dastardly plan, but Tarzan isn't so easily thwarted.įrom the seemingly empty Jungle Island, Tarzan finds a tribe of apes led by Akut, whom he manages to get to his side along with Sheeta, a panther. The villain intends to leave Tarzan on a deserted island, sell the kid to cannibals and have his way with Jane. He kidnaps him, his son and his wife Jane. Rokoff, the evil Russian from the previous books, has set his revenge towards Tarzan in motion. And better yet, he can make the beasts work together in order to do his bidding. In many ways 3rd novel in the Tarzan series is the Tarzan I think of when there's talk about the mighty lord of the jungle a savage, yet noble wild man, who can get the jungle beasts to his side only by calling them out. Recognizing "he world was a harsh place, guaranteed of quicksilver change and backhand slaps," Cow Tom builds a new homestead and prospers, taking a role as chief among African Creeks. Prospering until the Civil War, the family is driven from their land by Confederate Lower Creeks. Tademy’s research lends veracity to the tale, which later shifts to the perspective of Rose, Cow Tom’s granddaughter. Cow Tom's hard bargaining earns the family's freedom, but it's a long, hard struggle with prejudice before those with African-American blood are allowed into tribal roles. War over, Cow Tom, his wife, Amy, and daughters Malinda and Maggie are caught up in a desperate river journey to Fort Gibson in eastern Oklahoma. The Fall by Bethany Griffin5/28/2023 It feels like I read the book, and nothing really interesting happened. The story itself was all over the place, and I was left with far more questions than answers. I love the gothic feel and how the steampunk touches are a) just touches and b) in the background. Some of the imagery she creates is great. Griffin's derivative work doesn't share any of that depth. Poe's original is about the inevitability of death, the arrogance of the rich. In fact, all this book really borrows from the Poe original is names, and a basic plot device (sickness). Why did I skim it? Because Griffin's work was very incoherent, and I had to check if I was missing something vital with not having read the original work. I still haven't really read it, but I did skim it. However, before I got halfway through this book, I went online and tried to find the original story. I have read a handful of Poe's works, but The Masque of the Red Death wasn't one of them. This review can also be seen at Written Permission - A Reading and Writing Blogįirst off, before I started this book, I hadn't read the Poe original. AuthorWrite something about yourself.
